The following exercises and prayers accompany the 2022 Immanuel Approach Basic Training video series. Note: It is vitally important that you go through the training videos and practice exercises in the order they are presented. Firstly, the later exercises build very systematically on the earlier exercises, with all of the pieces from the earlier exercises coming together to produce the full Immanuel Approach process for emotional healing presented in the final exercises. And even more important, the earlier teaching segments and practice exercises set up safety nets which absolutely need to be in place before doing the trauma work included in the final three exercises.

Exercise Zero: Positive Memory Recall and Deliberate Appreciation (an especially gentle on-ramp)
Some people have minimal experience with deliberately recalling a positive memory, in detail, to the point of feeling strong appreciation. If you have plenty of time, it is ideal to start with this exercise. That is, after viewing training segment #1, it is ideal to start with this exercise before going to the “Interactive Connection in Context of Non-God Positive Memory” exercise. (Positive Memory Recall and Deliberate Appreciation, practice exercise handout, 5 pgs)
Interactive Connection in Context of Non-God Positive Memory (exercise to follow video training segment #1)
If time is limited and/or you are working with people who are already able to easily recall and connect with positive memories, then start with this practice exercise (after watching Immanuel Approach Basic Training video segment #1). Go through this practice exercise after watching IA Basic Training video segment #7. (Immanuel Approach Safety Nets, First Intermediate Scenario, exercise handout, 5 pgs)
Immanuel Approach Safety Nets, Second Intermediate Scenario: (practice exercise/role-play to follow video training segment #8)
NOTE: Most lay-person facilitators, who are doing the Immanuel Approach with a small circle of family and/or friends and/or colleagues, will never need the enhanced+ safety-net interventions demonstrated in training segment #8 and included in this exercise/role-play. Also, if you are an experienced prayer minister or mental health professional, and you are already comfortable with the attunement interventions described in training segment #9, then I expect you will use those interventions with any recipient who is really stuck in a really intense traumatic memory (as opposed to the more cumbersome interventions included in this exercise). However, if you are not yet comfortable with the training segment #9 attunement interventions, and if you are going to be leading Immanuel Approach practice exercises in large group settings and/or you know you are going to be working with recipients who have really intense traumatic memories, then it would be good to practice the interventions included in this exercise (after watching training segment #8). (Immanuel Approach Safety Nets, Second Intermediate Scenario, exercise handout, 7 pgs)
Immanuel Approach Safety Net Resource: Coaching Shalom for My Body
(Practice Exercise/Role-play to Follow Completion of Video Training Segment #9b)
Being able to coach the recipient through the shalom-for-my-body exercise can be very helpful for any situation in which very intense fear or anger becomes a problem. At any point in a session, if the recipient’s fear/anger becomes so great that they are having difficulty cooperating with the process and/or you are having difficulty facilitating, you can use the Shalom-for-my-body intervention to bring down the intensity. And if you are running out of time at the end of a session, so that you need to deploy the safety net, but the recipient is experiencing intense fear or anger, you can coach the recipient through the shalom for my body exercise, the intensity of their fear or anger will come down dramatically, and it will be much easier to deploy the safety net. Go through this practice exercise after watching training segment #9b. Immanuel Approach Safety Net Resource: Coaching Shalom for My Body, exercise handout, 3 pgs)
