We get many e-mails along the lines of, “What is Dr. Lehman’s office number? I’ve looked through all three websites, and none of the contact information includes phone numbers!” Yes, that’s correct. There isn’t any phone number information on our websites. We have discovered that we are not able to take phone calls from all the people who want phone consultations (or even referrals). Our experience is that even to just explain that we don’t have space in our practice and that we can’t provide phone consultations takes at least 30 minutes. Most people want to share their story as part of their request, and listening to their story is part of the attunement that helps them deal with their disappointment when we say “No.” So we either spend 45 minutes on the phone, or we say “No” and end the call in a way that feels painfully misattuning. Even those who just want referrals almost always end up wanting to talk for 30 to 60 minutes to share their story, as part of getting the right fit for a referral. And we simply aren’t able to do this (and still get anything else done). The good news is that I provide indirect, general consultations by eventually writing essays in response to e-mail questions, and all the referral information we have is on the “Referrals” page of www.immanuelapproach.com.
